How should glass bottles be cartoned automatically?

Glass bottle cartoning should be selected around support, impact, decoration and the complete loading path—not from dimensions or a headline machine speed alone.

Why do glass bottles need a specific cartoning review?

Glass bottles need application-specific review because impact, point loading, bottle-to-bottle contact and loss of support can damage the container or decoration even when the nominal dimensions fit the carton. The filled weight, base shape, centre of gravity, surface finish and closure all influence the safe transfer method.

Provide filled production-intent bottles rather than empty display samples. The product condition can change inertia and stability, while wet, dusty or freshly labelled surfaces may behave differently from clean dry samples. Define acceptable contact zones and the cosmetic acceptance standard before tooling is designed.

  • Identify scuff-sensitive labels, print, coatings and embossed areas.
  • State whether bottle-to-bottle contact is permitted during accumulation or collation.
  • Show closure overhangs, tamper bands and decorative features that must not be loaded.
  • Define the accepted position of the bottle inside the carton and any divider or insert.
  • Include normal upstream stops so pressure and accumulation can be evaluated.

Choose the loading direction around support and contact

Horizontal end loading can suit a stable glass bottle or controlled group when side contact and transfer force are acceptable; vertical loading can reduce sliding through the carton but requires secure pick, support and release. Neither method should be selected from bottle material alone.

Design the carton, divider and closure as part of the handling system

The folding carton must keep the glass bottle in the intended position without requiring damaging insertion force. Product-to-carton clearance, flap geometry, board condition and any divider or retaining feature should be reviewed together with the machine transfer.

For multipacks, define whether bottles may touch and how the group is contained during loading. A divider, partition or internal fitment may improve separation but adds another component that must be fed, positioned and verified. If it is manually fitted, the operator task and line balance still form part of the process.

What should a glass bottle cartoning trial prove?

  • Bottles remain controlled through normal infeed accumulation, stop and restart conditions.
  • Guides, grippers, lugs and pushers contact only approved surfaces.
  • The loading path does not chip, crack, scuff or destabilise the bottle.
  • The carton opens consistently and provides the agreed loading clearance.
  • Incorrectly presented bottles or incomplete packs are detected and recovered safely.
  • The finished carton protects the bottle and meets the agreed visual acceptance standard.
  • Representative changeovers reproduce the same settings and contact conditions.

Can glass bottles run on an automatic cartoning machine?

Glass bottles can be considered for automatic cartoning when the container, closure, decoration, carton and transfer method can be controlled without unacceptable impact or contact. Suitability must be confirmed with filled production-intent samples because dimensions alone do not show stability, friction, fragility or cosmetic sensitivity.

Is horizontal or vertical cartoning better for glass bottles?

The better method is the one that supports the bottle through the complete transfer with acceptable contact and recovery. Horizontal loading may suit a stable bottle or group; vertical loading may suit bottles that should not slide through a carton. A physical trial should compare the actual handling risks.

Do glass bottles need dividers inside the carton?

Dividers are not automatically required, but they may be appropriate when bottles must be separated, positioned or protected from contact. The divider adds a feeding and verification task, so the complete pack design should be tested rather than adding an insert without considering machine handling.

How are labels and decoration protected on glass bottles during cartoning?
