Should a cartoner output requirement be stated in bottles or cartons per minute?
State both. Bottles per minute describes the incoming product demand, while cartons per minute describes the cycle demand after the number of bottles in each carton is applied.
Both figures are necessary because a format change can alter bottles per carton without changing the upstream filling rate. The specification should also state the pack pattern, number of lanes, accepted finished-pack definition and whether the figures are nominal, peak or sustainable.
How do you convert bottle rate into the required carton rate?
Divide the incoming bottle rate by the number of bottles in each finished carton, then assess whether the resulting carton rate remains valid for every approved format.
The basic relationship is:
Required cartons per minute = incoming bottles per minute ÷ bottles per carton.
For example, a line delivering 120 bottles per minute into four-bottle cartons requires 30 cartons per minute before allowances for rejects, gaps, replenishment and line recovery are considered. This arithmetic is a demand calculation, not a machine capability claim.
How should rejects, short stops and changeovers be included in the output requirement?
Define sustainable accepted output separately from maximum cycle rate and state the operating conditions, test period, material replenishment, normal short stops, reject challenges and changeover assumptions included in the measurement.
Do not hide uncertainty inside an arbitrary efficiency percentage. Use real line information where available: filler rate variation, accumulation capacity, carton refill method, code checks, expected reject reasons and shift format. The supplier can then explain the proposed margin and which events are inside or outside the acceptance test.
What should a cartoner output acceptance test measure?
An output acceptance test should measure accepted finished cartons and relevant faults over an agreed period using controlled production-representative materials and defined upstream and downstream conditions.
Record the actual bottle and carton revisions, target and actual rate, accepted packs, rejects, material-related stops, machine faults, interventions and recovery time. If the line is integrated, state whether adjacent machines were live or simulated.
