An automatic cartoner should not only produce a closed carton. The project must define which components, codes and closure conditions are required, how they are checked and what happens when a pack cannot be accepted.

List every required pack component

Create a component list for each approved format: bottle or bottle group, folding carton, leaflet, divider, pad, promotional item, tamper feature and any external label. Mark whether each item is mandatory, optional or format dependent. The control system can only make a useful decision when the required combination is explicit.

Specify leaflet handling from the real component

Leaflet dimensions alone are not enough. Provide the paper, fold pattern, thickness or basis specification used by the supplier, print finish, delivery condition and accepted tolerances. A tightly folded or highly finished leaflet may behave differently in a magazine and transfer path from a plain development sample.

  • Define whether the leaflet is supplied flat, pre-folded or folded in line.
  • Record orientation and where it must sit relative to the product.
  • Identify pharmacode, barcode or other identity features only when they form part of the approved control strategy.
  • Provide samples from the intended printer and more than one batch where possible.
  • Agree replenishment access, low-level warning and the response to a missed or double feed.

Separate code generation from code verification

The coding device creates information; the inspection system decides whether the required result is present and acceptable. Define the data source, ownership of recipes, permitted manual entry, print location, character or code quality requirement and the verification method. A simple mark-presence sensor is not equivalent to reading and validating the printed content.

Where coding equipment is supplied by another party, the responsibility matrix should cover mechanical mounting, guarding, electrical supply, communications, trigger, encoder, product tracking, reject decision, test access and support. Use the line-integration guide to record these interfaces before the machine layout is frozen.

Design reject control for failure, not only normal running

A reject device is part of a control chain. The project should define product tracking from detection to rejection, confirmation that the intended pack left the good stream, reject-bin status, access control, reset rules and the response when the reject station is full, blocked or unavailable. Challenge tests should include the fault and the failure of the reject path itself.

Product, insert, carton, code, closure and recipe checks need a clear accepted condition and a method of challenge.

Track

Maintain pack identity through the machine

The control system must associate the detection result with the correct carton through indexing, stops and restart.

Reject and confirm

Prove removal from the accepted stream

Define confirmation, bin monitoring, access, reconciliation and the safe fault state when rejection cannot be completed.

Describe every fault that must not reach the accepted-product stream
