What is an intermittent-motion cartoner?

An intermittent-motion cartoner advances cartons by a defined index and provides a stationary dwell at one or more stations for operations such as loading, flap manipulation, coding or inspection.

The dwell can make timing and access easier to understand, especially when a product must be placed or pushed while the carton is stationary. The trade-off is that repeated acceleration and deceleration must be controlled, and the usable rate still depends on the slowest operation, product presentation and carton behaviour.

  • Define the operation performed during each dwell.
  • Check product and carton stability during acceleration.
  • Include stop, restart and missed-product scenarios in the trial.

What is a continuous-motion cartoner?

A continuous-motion cartoner keeps cartons moving through coordinated stations and performs loading, closing or inspection while the carton remains in controlled motion.

This can reduce repeated stop-start movement, but it requires precise synchronisation between product, carton and tooling. The product must be presented at the correct pitch and phase, and the loading device must follow a moving target. Continuous motion therefore depends heavily on stable upstream flow and a clearly defined operating envelope.

It should not be selected from headline speed alone; product control and line recovery are equally important.

Does continuous motion always produce more accepted cartons?

No. Continuous motion can support higher mechanical rates in suitable applications, but accepted output is limited by product presentation, carton quality, inspection, reject handling, replenishment, changeovers and the behaviour of the complete line.

A slower concept that handles the pack reliably may deliver more accepted cartons over a shift than a faster mechanism that suffers frequent micro-stops. Compare concepts using the same sample set, pack revision, line-state scenarios and acceptance period. Record accepted output, faults and recovery—not only the displayed speed.
