A line-control specification should state what every machine knows, signals and does during normal running, material shortage, downstream blockage, fault, safety stop and restart.

Which operating states should be defined for a cartoning machine?

At minimum, define stopped, ready, running, starved, blocked, low material, faulted, safety stopped, manual or setup mode and the conditions required to restart.

The names may differ between systems, but every state needs an entry condition, permitted motion, signals to adjacent machines, operator indication and exit condition. A clear state model prevents separate suppliers from making incompatible assumptions about when product can move.

What should happen after power loss or an emergency stop?

The machine should return to a defined safe condition, retain or deliberately reconstruct the information needed to identify products and cartons in process, and require an intentional restart sequence before production resumes.

The actual safety response is determined by the machine-specific risk assessment. From a production perspective, the specification must also address incomplete cartons, products between sensors, heater or glue-system status, pneumatic pressure, code data and downstream availability. Restart testing should include controlled challenges rather than only a normal stop.

How is product and carton memory retained through a stop?

Product memory is retained by associating sensor events, positions or tracking records with the physical items in the machine and defining what happens when that association becomes uncertain.

Some machines track each pitch; others use simpler presence logic. The required level depends on inspection, batch and reject needs. The specification should state how manual removal, reverse movement, power cycling and failed sensors affect the record. When certainty is lost, the system needs a controlled clearance or rejection rule.

Which signals should pass between a cartoner and adjacent machines?

Signals should cover readiness, running permission, starved and blocked status, faults, safety interfaces where applicable, speed or rate reference, batch or recipe context and any product or reject information needed across the boundary.

The exact interface depends on the line architecture and should be documented in one schedule that names the source, destination, meaning, fail state and test method for each signal.

A retrofit controls schedule should document how the retained line currently starts, stops, starves, blocks, faults and resets, then define the intended behaviour after the cartoner is added. This prevents a new interface from changing product flow or restart logic unexpectedly.
