Tuck flaps or hot-melt glue: choosing a carton closure
Tuck and hot-melt glue closures can both support automatic cartoning, but they create different carton-design, tooling, inspection, maintenance and operating requirements.

Compare the finished-pack requirement first
The closure method should protect the product, meet the intended opening experience and run reliably with the approved board and finish. Start with the finished-pack requirement: security, tamper evidence, reopening, presentation, transport and any downstream case-packing pressure. Then confirm that the blank design and machine sequence can deliver it.

Make a tuck closure repeatable
A tuck flap must arrive at the insertion point in the correct plane, with the crease preconditioned as intended and the receiving panel supported. A tab that works during hand packing can fail automatically if the slot clearance is marginal, the board springs back, the flap edge is damaged or the product pushes against the closing panel.
- Provide the approved dieline and representative blanks from the intended converter.
- Define the acceptable tab engagement and the visible standard of the closed panel.
- Check whether carton contents or inserts can interfere with the flap path.
- Trial cartons across the accepted board and crease variation.
- Challenge normal stop and restart conditions, not only continuous running.
Control a hot-melt glue process
Adhesive selection and operating settings must be confirmed with the responsible carton and adhesive specialists for the actual board, coating, storage and production environment. The cartoner scope should define who supplies the glue system, how the application is triggered, which faults are monitored, how the pattern is challenged and how safe access for filling and maintenance is managed.
Do not treat adhesive presence alone as proof of an acceptable closure. Bond performance also depends on substrate condition, application pattern, open time, panel alignment, compression and the state of the finished carton after the agreed handling period. Acceptance criteria should state what will be inspected and when.

Test the closure as part of the whole pack
Use production-representative bottles, inserts and cartons because internal pressure, product position and panel support can change closure behaviour. Include the hardest accepted carton batches and inspect the pack after discharge, accumulation and normal downstream handling. Record the sample revision and machine settings with each result.

Do not stop the tuck decision at “no glue”
A tuck-closed carton still needs the correct flap direction, dieline, blank orientation and closing sequence. Straight tuck and reverse tuck formats can require different tooling approaches even when the erected carton dimensions are similar.
